The Life and Times of Joe Suttle

Teacher Almost Jailed

Twice this week, there have been enewsletters about the Connecticut teacher who almost went to jail for "porn in the classroom". As you know, I am no champion for most public school teachers, but in this case, the poor lady lost her teaching credential because of "malware".

Malware is the bad software that can infect computers – yours and mine, if we are not vigilant about anti-virus and anti-adware. To top it off, she was not even the regular teacher in this classroom, so the computer wasn't even hers.

You can read the the report by Robert Cringeley or the followup piece in IT World. The teacher is Julie Amero, and contrary to what you might see on CSI, there were no intelligent crime scene investigators in this case. Outside security consultants – on their own – took on the case. Their investigation found several things, but the biggest was that the school district's own policies prevented Julie from being protected.

Truly a case of bumbling – poor computer security, poor police work and poor investigation of the evidence. Too bad they took her credential and then granted an appeal. She will never teach again, but who knows who will be struck next.

The real issue here was not "bad" teacher, but rather bad malware that popped up those pictures, on someone elses computer which she just happened to be using.

First Voices Now Pictures

Grandfather - J.D. ElsberryFinally dug out the box with my Uncle’s pictures – reason being, I need to find those pictures when he flew to Langston, OK. Yes, there really is a place named Langston. Uncle flew there with (I think) some instructor or other such person after he graduated from Tuskeegee Instituee and got his “Wings”.

While looking for those pictures (which I had seen many times), ran across one of my grandmother’s photo albums. Not many pictures, but there was a picture of my grandfather, Joseph Dean Elsberry. Really need to get more information about him, because I have no recollection of him when I was a little boy in Oklahoma. This will be a good reason to make contact with my half-brother John Dean in Stillwater, OK.

Politically Incorrect?

Looks like Republican wins (ok, only one) have effectively kept the Democrats from having a filibuster-proof Senate. Too bad that the very people whom we elect to serve us have no concept of serving. It's almost more like they want to be server. I can thing of many ways they can participate in our recovery – like stop flying in private jets, or taking high salaries. Why don't they read all the stuff for Congress rather than have their staff people read and tell them what it says?

Apparently there have been cases of someone in the House or Senate voting on a bill, and not having any idea of what is actually in the package – oops, guess they get that from some of their constituents who vote the way someone tells them, rather than read and discuss the "Voter Handbook."

Keep watching the way things go in Washington, and remember that something was going to change. Can only hope for the best for Obama and his team, but I wouldn't trust a plumber to do my heart surgery. Even more leary of elected officials who have never held a real job for a money making enterprise. You know, one where part of their job is to help the company make money so it can stay in business.
